Mix sugar, flour, egg and milk. Melt stick of butter or margarine in casserole dish. Pour mixture into center of melted butter or margarine so that melted butter flows up and over mixture. Add fruit to center, pushing fruit gently out to edges of dish. Cook in preheated oven at 375° for 30 to 40 minutes, until brown on top and so mixture is cooked to a sponge-like consistency.
Some people enjoy eating hot with milk poured over cobbler. If peaches are unavailable, apples, blueberries or any choice fruit will work.
