Mix together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, milk, butter, and vanilla. Pour this batter into a buttered 1 1/2- to 2-quart baking dish. In same bowl, mix together cherries, 1 cup cherry juice and water mixture, and 2/3 cup sugar. Pour cherry mixture over the batter. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. The cherries, in a syrup, will be on the bottom. Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
