Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to bring in my sheet to pick up my prizes?
While we like seeing your finished reading logs, you do not have to bring in your completed sheet to pick up your prizes. If you are a Youth participant, you will need to let us know how many reading logs you have completed and what prizes you have already received. Your first and second reading logs receive special prizes. If you are an Adult participant, you will need to let us know how many days you have completed.
Do I have to come in every week to get prizes?
No! You can pick up prizes at your convenience. Visit weekly as you go, sporadically over the 8 weeks, or wait until you are finished to pick up all your prizes at once.
Are there any requirements for what we read or how long we read to mark a day? What kind of reading counts?
There are no requirements. We suggest 15-20 minutes a day, but please feel free to adjust to your needs.
All reading activities count! Listened to a book on CD? Check! Listened to someone read a story out loud to you? Check! Read a graphic novel? Check! Took a walk with your preschooler and read aloud the signs you saw together? Check and check! Any reading or literacy activity counts for everyone involved including babies and adults. For adults, any library-related activity counts. See the back of the adult log for more details.
If I submit the online prize entry, do I get to choose which prizes I hope to win?
Yes! On each entry form, you will be asked to choose the prize you would like if your name is drawn. You may enter for the same prize each week or enter for a different option. The choice is up to you. You can enter each week or enter all 8 entries at once.
I love to read, and last year I finished the program quickly. Can I earn another book prize if I read more than 14 days?
We do not have the funding to provide more than one book prize or more than one coupon bag per person, but we’d love to recommend titles you can borrow from the library.
Why is the Summer Reading Program for all ages? Why not just kids?
Being a reading role model is a powerful way to instill a love of reading in a child’s life. You are your child’s first teacher—if your child sees you reading and enjoying your reading experience then they are more likely to learn to love reading as well. And not just you, but all family members can participate in our Summer Reading Program and be reading role models.
Don’t have kids? The Summer Reading Program is still for you! Reading is not only entertaining, but also a way to continue learning, reduce stress, and prevent cognitive decline for adults.
Why is the Adult Summer Reading Program different from the one for kids?
Adults use the library for many different reasons: entertainment, community, business, research and more. We wanted to encourage participation for all adult patrons, however they use the library.
