Tumblebooks: A great children's resource for language acquisition!

Written by published on Mon, 08/29/2016 - 6:22pm

tumblebook

For young children learning to read and/or who are learning English, Tumblebooks is a great online resource for building multiple literacy skills. Tumblebooks Storybooks has a large selection of picture books that allow the reader to follow along with a narrator who reads the text.  Sentences are highlighted as the words are spoken, providing the opportunity to hear and see the words. For older students, Tumblebooks Read Alongs are chapter books that follow the same format that helps the student to see and hear the text as it is being read. There is also a collection of books in Spanish and French. All you need to access this resource is your library card and pin!  From the UAPL homepage, click on Research Databases on the menu bar at the top and scroll down till you see the Tumblebooks database.  Happy reading!

Recommended Books

  • Watching a relative change because of dementia or Alzheimer's is a difficult thing to understand. In this book, Noah loves visiting his grandparents and especially spending time with Grandpa and he doesn't understand when Grandpa begins to forget things and can no longer do simple tasks like cutting his toast. This is a tender story about change and loss and is suitable for sharing one on one or in a group.  Recommended for PreS-gr. 2

  • Wiggle your toes and touch your nose. Now can you guess the yoga pose? First we listen to the clue, then we see what we can do! Introduce your children to the joy of yoga with this riddle book.  Recommended for ages 4-7.

  • Get your kids interested in election season with this duel portrait of two of America's most famous presidents: Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. Well organized with intriguing illustrations, the book draws parallels between the presidents' personal lives and legacies. While the book touches on the tragic end of both presidents' lives, it does not show any graphic detail, making the book appropriate for all ages. Recommended for ages 5 and up.
