tumblebook

For young children learning to read and/or who are learning English, Tumblebooks is a great online resource for building multiple literacy skills. Tumblebooks Storybooks has a large selection of picture books that allow the reader to follow along with a narrator who reads the text.  Sentences are highlighted as the words are spoken, providing the opportunity to hear and see the words. For older students, Tumblebooks Read Alongs are chapter books that follow the same format that helps the student to see and hear the text as it is being read. There is also a collection of books in Spanish and French. All you need to access this resource is your library card and pin!  From the UAPL homepage, click on Research Databases on the menu bar at the top and scroll down till you see the Tumblebooks database.  Happy reading!

  • Exuberant redhead Erik always tries his best, but he just can't understand why he's missing homework questions at school and messing up at soccer practice. Then one day in art class everyone notices that Erik's painted a picture of himself with green hair! It turns out he's not just creative, he's color blind, too. Once Erik is diagnosed, he and his parents, teachers, coach, and classmates figure out solutions that work with his unique way of seeing, and soon he's back on track.

  • This picture book is a wonderful celebration of the art of storytelling!  Using simple text and illustrations, the author traces the evolution of storytelling from humanity's earliest days to the present. From cave drawings to the invention of the printing press, this book is an excellent introduction to stories, books, and reading. Recommended for ages 4-8.

  • This clever cookbook incorporates simple recipes and classic fairy tales with a culinary twist. In each recipe, the ingredients are listed and then a fairytale story begins. Interspersed between paragraphs are simple and clear cooking instructions. By the end of each story, children will have made a tasty treat.  Jack and the Green Beanstalk and Three Chili Goats Puff are just two of the fairytale story/recipes. This book combines storytelling and cooking and will be a fun activity for parent and child!  Recommended for PreS-Gr 4
