Whiskey-5 Hotel: Nonfiction Writing Workshop

If you feel you have a book inside you, but are having trouble getting it out, join David Meyers, author of Historic Columbus Crimes, Wicked Columbus, and other books of local history, for a nonfiction writing workshop that is light on work, but heavy on fun. David is a student in the learn-by-doing school and is happy to share some of the techniques he has happened upon for sharpening your writing skills.

Digging Up Story Bones

So you’ve written your story, but now you aren’t sure what you have… or what to do next. A fun, visual strategy for structuring a creative piece, with hands-on coaching by Jody Casella. Jody is an author and a former high school English teacher. Her novel for young adults, Thin Space, received a starred review from Kirkus and was a finalist on the 2014-15 Florida Teens Read List.

Grounded and Launching: The Poetry of Place

Two of Rikki Santer’s poetry collections have celebrated place: Front Nine (the Hopewell earthworks of Newark, Ohio) and Kahiki Redux (the late Kahiki Supper Club of Columbus, Ohio). In this session, you will savor examples of poets exploring location from varying perspectives, and then, through a smorgasbord of tips and prompts, you will compose your own poem about a place that is special for you. Rikki Santer is an award-winning poet whose work has appeared in numerous publications including Ms. Magazine, Poetry East, Margie, Crab Orchard Review, Grimm and The Main Street Rag. She is a 2016 Pushcart nominee.​
