Recently the Teen Advisory Board of the Upper Arlington Public Library held a poetry contest with three divisions.  The 5-8 grade winner was Ainsley D. whose poem” I Am Sunshine” appears below followed by the 9-12 grade winner, Beth B. for her poem “Wings”. Congratulations!

I Am Sunshine

I Am Sunshine
Dancing all around
I am beauty
Clothed in swirling clouds
I am happiness
Laughing at the sun
I am fearlessness
With my hair undone
I am wind
Knowing all things
I am fire
Love songs I sing
I am water
Quick and carefree
I am earth
Wrapped in mystery
I am a Girl. I am free

-by Ainsley D.

Tattered broken wings were my companions.
Dirty, frayed and unkept was their sad state.
I wandered alone like a poor phantom.
I suffered from an invisible weight.

In a silent moment I realized it.
I could not live with this oppressive weight,
I could no longer just stay here and sit.
It was time to start with a new, clean slate.

I brushed my wings until they were spotless,
And began to strech their unused muscles.
A fresh start in life brought a strange calmness.
It was a feeling that made me chuckle.

I push off from the ground and take to the sky.
I am free and I no longer cry.
