Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center is one of UAPL’s hidden gems when it comes to the resources available to our patrons.

Covering all sorts of crafts, hobbies and forms of recreation, you can search hundreds of books, magazines and videos to find information on what interests you.

Find and print new sewing patterns, get ideas for making jewelry, learn what it takes to brew your own beer, get tips on the gear you would need for rock climbing, and much, much more.

UAHS Student Portal

Students, do you feel overwhelmed trying to find appropriate sources for your projects and homework? Then the UAHS Student Portal is for you!

The UAPL Reference Librarians have narrowed down our extensive list of resources and organized them by categories that are relevant to high school students.

Easily discover databases and eBooks with information from encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, professional journals and other sources appropriate for school work. Many of these resources even tell you how to cite what you found! Best of all, they are all available any time of day.

You will need your UA library card number and PIN to access the valuable resources found through the UAHS Student Portal. And don’t forget, you can always contact a Reference Librarian by phone, textemail, or in person for assistance in using our databases and eBooks.

Did you know you don’t always have to go to the library to look up reliable and authoritative information in reference books?

Whether you are working on a school project or research paper, have a bet with a friend over a fact, or just want to satisfy your curiosity about a topic, UAPL card holders can get online access to a variety of encyclopedia titles covering science, history, business, medicine, culture and much more. You can even use your mobile device when you’re on the go!

An example of just a few titles that are available include:

Gale Directory Library

Contains listings from the Gale Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media for radio stations, television stations, and cable companies, including those from the United States and Canada, and listings from the Encyclopedia of Associations for national organizations in the United States.

Novelist Plus

Drawing of a boy reading a book in a tree.So you’re planning on getting some reading done this summer? Why not let the Summer Library Club help you meet a goal of reading at least 20 hours? (Bonus: There are prizes for adults, too!) In addition to reading, there are also activities you can complete as well, including checking out one of the library’s coolest online resources, Novelist Plus.

When you finish a book you love, Novelist Plus is where you can go to help you figure out the age-old question: “What should I read next?”

Search by genre or plot to find something you’re interested in, or enter your favorite books for spot-on recommendations (“Read-alikes”) for the next book you’ll love. You can even read multiple reviews on a title before you commit to it. 

Novelist has other valuable content as well. Wondering what order to read the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series? Get discussion guides for your book club. Find out every title that ever won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. All this, and more!

Every time you check out Novelist Plus during the Summer Library Club, it counts as an activity, so use it each time you are ready to start another book!

Are you a knitting enthusiast looking for new patterns to try? Or are you interested in trying a new pastime, like gardening or rock climbing?

Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center is a full-text database that has articles from over 740 magazines, books and videos covering over 140 different crafts and hobbies.

In this unique resource you can find information on everything from beading to home brewing. Articles are available in high-quality PDF format. You can search by category or browse resources in your area of interest.

VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever

VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever is an extensive and entertaining source for information about almost any title available on DVD! Each entry has information about the cast, director, genre, rating, length, and more. They also have short, but informative, reviews on every title, including a “bone” rating system for a quick reference.

Part of the Gale Virtual Reference Library, VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever is an e-reference book that is available to patrons anywhere, any time of day with a UAPL library card number and PIN.

Using VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever is also an activity in the Summer Library Club, along with watching a movie about a hero. Find a well-reviewed superhero movie in Videohound, and knock out two activities at once!

Long a staple of our electronic collection, NoveList Plus can help find that “next great read” in a variety of ways, including searching or browsing by title, author, plot or genre. You will also find featured content such as Book Discussion Guides, Book Talks, Recommended Reads and more.

For kids and teens, we also offer NoveList K-8, featuring fiction and non-fiction titles in an easy to use interface designed with young readers in mind.
