The most important awards in children's literature were handed out last week. The American Library Association (ALA) announced their Youth Media Awards for 2014, which includes the Caldecott and Newbery medals. Kate DiCamillo won her second Newbery for Flora & Ulysses, the story of a young comic book fan and superhero squirrel. Ms. DiCamillo won the award previously for The Tale of Despereaux. You can find a list of all of the award winners, present and past, on the ALA's website.
To celebrate these awards, here are three Newbury Award winners that you can read today.
- In Moon Over Manifest (2011, Winner), 12-year old Abilene is sent to live with her father's friend, and learns about the history of the town and her family.
- When You Reach Me (2010, Winner) - Miranda lives with her mother in Manhattan and tries to decifer a series of notes that seem to come from a different time and place.
- After Tupac and D Foster (2009, Honor) - three friends bond over a love of rap music, until “D” must leave her foster home and return to her mother.
