 Library Assistant 2 - Youth Services

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Assists in program planning, preparation and presentation. 
  • Supervises volunteers working in the department as needed.
  • Trains and assists new staff members and volunteers as assigned.
  • Suggests and/or create displays in public areas.
  • Assists librarians with collection maintenance including weeding projects and repairs. 
  • Instructs patrons on the use of computer-based library catalog and computer programs.
  • Monitors and provides guidance to patrons in the use of library facilities, services, and computer equipment.
  • Performs routine data entry and retrieval; maintains work records; answers phone and takes messages; answers questions at the Youth Services desk and explains library policy. 
  • Promotes and educates patrons on the use of online resources such as the library catalog, M.O.R.E. and library databases.Responds to reference questions involving youth materials using all formats available and performs reader’s advisory.Assists in the development of reader’s advisory tools including booklists and bibliographies.Assists with fulfilling teacher requests.
  • Straightens public areas for neatness and safety
  • Responds to patron questions and situations in accordance with library policy and in a manner to enhance the reputation of the library as a public service organization.
  • Follows library safety and emergency policies and procedures.
  • Reports maintenance and safety issues to supervisor and/or Facilities personnel.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Two to four years of college, under-graduate degree preferred
  • Knowledge of library practices and procedures preferred
  • Prefer two or more years experience in a library or education environment
  • Prefer some course work in library science
  • Knowledge of children’s literature reader’s advisory preferred
  • Youth programming experience preferred
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English

Hours:

Mondays 9-1 pm, Tuesdays 9-5 pm and Thursdays 5-9 pm and every other weekend:  Saturday 9-5 pm and Sunday 12-6 pm

Note – scheduling flexibility is necessary in this position. 

Salary Range:

$ 10.40 per hour minimum starting rate of pay
