 Library Assistant 2 – Lane Road

Summary of Duties:

  • Assumes independent responsibility for assigned specialized work area.  This position is assigned the responsibility of coordinating children’s craft programs.
  • Acts as department supervisor as needed.  Communicates daily problems with next shift supervisor.  Provides direction and task assignment for pages and support staff.  Resolves scheduling problems to ensure proper coverage for each station.  Oversees opening/closing procedures.
  • Trains and assists new staff members and volunteers as assigned.
  • Provides patron assistance with circulation and borrowing.  Charges and discharges books and audiovisual materials; sorts returned books and other circulating materials for reserve items; collects fines; notifies patrons of overdue items; answers patron questions by phone or at the counter; enters and/or changes patron information at data entry terminal; organizes returned books and materials, retrieves reserves and holds for patrons.
  • Performs routine data entry and retrieval; maintains work records; answers phone and takes messages; answers questions at the Circulation desk and explains library policy. 
  • Provides patron assistance including answering basic directional questions, issuing new and replacement library cards, issuing Golden Buckeye Cards, distributing Voter Registration forms, providing maps to the building and the local area, and making meeting room reservations. 
  • Accepts donations for Friends of the Library.
  • Suggests and/or create displays in public areas.
  • Identifies materials in need of repair/replacement and takes appropriate action.
  • Instructs patrons on the use of computer-based library catalog and computer programs.
  • Monitors and provides guidance to patrons in the use of library facilities, services, and computer equipment.Promotes and educates patrons on the use of online resources such as the library catalog, M.O.R.E. and library databases.
  • Registers patrons for library programs.
  • Responds to reference questions involving materials using all formats available and performs reader’s advisory.
  • Reconciles daily circulation cash register receipts.  Prepares daily deposits slip and takes daily deposit to bank for deposit into library bank account as needed.
  • Straightens public areas for neatness and safety.
  • Responds to patron questions and situations in accordance with library policy and in a manner to enhance the reputation of the library as a public service organization.
  • Follows library safety and emergency policies and procedures.
  • Reports maintenance and safety issues to supervisor and/or Facilities personnel.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Two to four years of college, under-graduate degree preferred
  • Knowledge of library practices and procedures preferred
  • Two or more years experience in a library or education environment preferred
  • Some course work in library science preferred
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license, reliable transportation and proof of insurance required

Hours:

Part-time
  • Mondays 5-9 pm
  • Wednesdays 5- 9 pm
  • Thursdays 8:30-5 pm
  • Every other weekend:  Saturday 8:30–5 pm and Sunday 11:30–6 pm

Salary Range:

$10.40 per hour minimum starting rate of pay
