Good Books Are Great Gifts

Recommended by Norma Wheller, UAPL Adult Services Librarian

Last week I was in a local store. I saw a display that said "Books are perfect gifts." I had to smile because my opening here is: Good books are great gifts. Here are some ideas... these eye-catching coffee table books will impress the in-laws and knock out the neighbors. These books are full of gorgeous photography.

The Art of Mantua
by Barbara Furlotti and Guido Rebecchini

Italian art has never been more beautiful than in The Art of Mantua. Mantua is a northern Italian city that has a rich art heritage because it was a major cultural center during the Renaissance. We see surviving frescoes, premier paintings, and excellent architecture all rendered in true hues. This book is a feast for art history fans.

Wild Ohio: The Best of Our Natural Heritage
by James McCormac and Gary Meszaros

Beautiful color photographs by Meszaros highlight this discussion of outstanding natural habitats in Ohio. Naturalist McCormac provides an overview of our state's rare plants and animals. The authors feature forty sites around Ohio showing a fascinating array of flora and fauna.

If you are interested in Ohio's natural history and landscape, you will definitely appreciate this book.

Nature's Great Events: The Most Amazing Natural Events on the Planet
By Karen Bass

This book is the lavishly illustrated companion to the Discovery Channel's wildlife documentary Nature's most Amazing Events which aired this past summer. It charts six seasonal events that transform entire ecosystems that are important to our planet's survival.

The astonishing photography of animal life make this book a great choice for the family.

Chanel and her World
by Edmonde Charles-Roux

Style is always in style. And for Coco Chanel style was always everything. Here we have a biography of Coco Chanel titled Chanel and her World by Edmonde Charles-Roux. Out of print for a decade, this book has been reissued with large color photos of Chanel and traces her life from being a shopgirl in Moulins to her triumph and transformation of the world of fashion. Chanel is the fashion icon who introduced womens' slacks, costume jewelry and the exquisitely comfortable suit. Her couture perfume Chanel No. 5 is still the most popular scent ever created.

If you're a fan of fashion history, this bio about Coco Chanel who got rid of corsets and feathers and thus invented modern clothing is a must read.

  • Frosty the Snowman, 1969 (animated TV) G

Narrated by Jimmy Durante, the delightful classic Frosty the Snowman will surely bring smiles to kids faces when a snowman named Frosty magically comes alive. To stay alive, he must find somewhere to go before spring comes and he melts. Of all the Christmas movies, this one reminds me of love and goodness more than any other, and that we need to appreciate enjoy our friends and family here and now.

  • Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, 1964 G

In Rudolph, you get a wonderful, clay animation story that delightfully relays lessons of love, tolerance and acceptance.

  • A Charlie Brown Christmas, 1965 G

I just love the Peanuts gang and it never gets old watching Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy and the rest of the bunch searching for ways to find the meaning of Christmas in this animated TV special from 1965.

  • Miracle on 34th Street, 1947 G

Definitive proof that Santa really does exist. And a classic that never gets stale: Is there a Santa or is it the man that works in Macy's every year? Here Santa goes to court to prove who he is while working his magic on 3 very special people.

  • Home Alone, 1990 PG

The film that propelled Macaulay Culkin to stardom, this is the story of a kid left behind in the confusion of hurried large family on their way to a vacation. We watch him as he faces the holiday alone in his big house forcing to use the best of his imagination and ability to survive.

  • The Santa Clause, 1994 PG

The story of a man, who accidentally kills Santa and then has to take his job, unwillingly at first, but growing to love it. Don't expect the sequels to measure up!

  • A Christmas Story, 1983 PG

This story of a young boy's relentless quest to get his hands on a Red Ryder BB gun provides for a hilarious and very entertaining movie with a cult following.

  • The Dog who saved Christmas, 2009 PG

Zeus the guard dog, appears to be less than the dependable pet that the Bannister family needs. However, when two burglars set out to break into the home while they're away for Christmas, Zeus seizes the chance to be a hero, proving every dog has his day.

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 1966 NR

Last but not least my very favorite animation of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The original classic story, narrated by Boris Karloff , Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas has become a holiday tradition with its tale of the Grinch's efforts to halt Christmas.
