A Nation Under Our Feet
A Nation Under Our Feet” is the latest, and most critically acclaimed take on Marvel’s Black Panther.
Written by award-winning author Ta-Neishi Coates, Nation follows an older T’Challa than the one we're used to seeing on film. He is a more experienced leader, and has become a disillusioned hero, watching over a Wakanda that is on a decline. The kingdom is restless, there are rumblings of revolution in the air, internal terrorism on the rise, and the people of Wakanda have lost their faith in their government.
T’Challa, duty-bound, resumes his place as the nation’s ruler and protector, after his sister Shuri’s disappearance. A nation without its queen, which wants nothing to do with its king.
This series is recommended reading for newcomers and die-hard fans alike that are looking for more super-heroes in their reading lists.
Game Changers: the story of Venus and Serena Williams
This new picture book biography of the two sisters uses captivating collage-style illustrations to tell the story of how Venus and Serena Williams overcame every obstacle thrown at them to become living history. We learn of their continual support of each other and how being in competition does not mean that they can’t celebrate each other’s successes as well. Author Lesa Cline-Ransome and illustrator James E. Ransome also carefully paint a picture of how tennis is as a sport is inaccessible to many people. This book would offer a smooth transition into a conversation about the racial and cultural barriers of certain sports, to help future generations continue to break down those walls.
