The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women by Kate Moore
During World War I, many American women worked in factories supporting the war effort. One of the more lucrative jobs was painting luminous dials on watches for soldiers; however, the paint they used contained radium. With no protection, not even gloves or smocks, the girls went home every night covered in radium. It was in their hair, on their nails, and inside their clothes. If you turned out the lights, their bodies glowed in the dark. After the war, there was still a high demand for luminous watches, so while many women moved on and started their own families, many more women replaced them. Everything was going well until one by one they started getting sick. Follow these women as they conquer what would seem an insurmountable battle and change the way we think about worker’s rights.
The Dark Dark by Samantha Hunt
The Dark Dark is a collection of small but gripping stories that are simultaneously unnerving and beautifully written. The stories play out from the perspectives of various characters, mostly women, and follow their internal dialogues as they deal with things from the mundane aspects of everyday life to the wildly vivid supernatural twists the author injects.
For example, in “Beast,” a young, anxious woman does not know how to talk to her husband anymore—a problem she desperately wants to fix since she began turning into a deer each night. “The Yellow” is about a perennial foul-up and his life-changing quest to reinvent himself, inspired by a can of paint and a bad ventilation system.
For readers looking for something honest with its emotions, and just odd enough to keep you up, this is a great read.
