For children ages 2-6 and their families. Young children will learn a variety of skills: rhyming, identifying sounds and letters, asking questions and repeating sentences while participating in stories, rhymes, songs and extension activities.

For children ages 2-3 and their caregivers. Songs, rhymes and stories teach children how sounds and letters relate to reading and will build a foundation for future learning. Interaction with instructors and other children encourages social development and allows caregivers to connect.

With its beautiful grisaille decoration, this fascinating prayer book from about 1325, measuring only 3 5/8 x 2 3/8 inches, made a huge impact on later manuscripts in terms of how marginalia directly interacted with the prayer text, and in the tension between the sister arts of painting and sculpture. It consequently paved the way for the Boucicaut Hours of the Duke de Berry, as well as for Jan van Eyck’s paintings, including the Thyssen Annunciation diptych, both of which we will compare to images in the book.

For students in grades 4-6 and a caregiver. Library instructors facilitate a discussion of a selected past Newbery winner or honor title to teach critical thinking and appreciation for literature. This month we will read My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett. Multiple copies of the book will be available for check-out at each UAPL location; each family is responsible for securing their own copy. (60 min.)
