Teen Recommendation: Defy the Stars
Noemi Vidal is a teen soldier from the planet Genesis, once a colony of Earth that's now at war for its independence. After a surprise attack, Noemi finds herself stranded in space on an abandoned ship where she meets Abel, the most sophisticated mech prototype ever made...one who should be her enemy. Before long, Noemi begins to realize Abel may be more than a machine, and, for his part, Abel's devotion to Noemi is no longer just a matter of programming.
This is Your Life, Harriet Chance by Jonathan Evison
Everyone, at some point in their lives, looks back and wonders how did I end up here? Jonathan Evison uses his character, Harriet Chance, to create a bittersweet tale of a woman who is faced with her own mortality and coming to terms with the choices and decisions she has made for better or worse. The author uses flashbacks to different times in the character's life to demonstrate why and how Harriet has ended up, at 78 years of age, on an Alaskan cruise. Her story is filled with regrets and recriminations but she's still hopeful she may be able to salvage, if not her own life, then perhaps the lives of those she has hurt.
