Grounded and Launching: The Poetry of Place

Two of Rikki Santer’s poetry collections have celebrated place: Front Nine (the Hopewell earthworks of Newark, Ohio) and Kahiki Redux (the late Kahiki Supper Club of Columbus, Ohio). In this session, you will savor examples of poets exploring location from varying perspectives, and then, through a smorgasbord of tips and prompts, you will compose your own poem about a place that is special for you. Rikki Santer is an award-winning poet whose work has appeared in numerous publications including Ms. Magazine, Poetry East, Margie, Crab Orchard Review, Grimm and The Main Street Rag. She is a 2016 Pushcart nominee.

In the spring of 1970 growing student protests forced the Ohio State University to close entirely for two weeks - an event unprecedented in the institution’s 100 year history. How could a campus that previously seemed immune to the unrest sweeping other campuses go off the tracks so far and so quickly? Join Bill Shkurti for a discussion of his newest book “The Ohio State University in the Sixties: The Unraveling of the Old Order. Using news stories, archival materials and personal interviews, Shkurti has reconstructed the unique circumstances of those tumultuous times into a compelling narrative.
