Youth Chess Club

For students in grades 3-6. Checkmate! Chess lovers of all levels are welcome to join our Youth Chess Club. Our local teen experts will moderate, help beginners and suggest strategies to players. Registration is required and begins two weeks prior. (45 min.)

Children and caregivers join us for stories, building and fun! Each month we’ll read a couple of stories to start, then the building will begin with our LEGO Duplo blocks. We provide books and blocks as inspiration, then your child gets hands-on building time. Please note, children will not be able to keep their creations. Registration is required and begins two weeks prior.

Tail Wagging Tutors

Kids in grades K-5 are invited to join Marty Marlatt and her trained therapy dogs for a fun way to practice their reading skills. Participants will take turns sharing stories with registered therapy dogs (TDI). We’ll provide the books or you can bring your favorites. No enrollment is required.

Spectrum Storytime

This monthly storytime is designed for young children on the Autism spectrum and/or children with sensory processing sensitivities. We will have stories, songs, and activities to encourage literacy and positive associations with reading and the library. This is a registered event; registration is limited to 8 children and their caregiver(s), and must be made in-person or by phone. This program is designed for children with a developmental stage of 3-5 years old; children aged 10 and under are welcome.

Parent-Child Newbery Book Discussion: One Crazy Summer

For students in grades 4-6 and a caregiver. Library instructors facilitate a discussion of a selected past Newbery winner or honor title to teach critical thinking and appreciation for literature. This month we will read One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia. Multiple copies of the book will be available for check-out at each UAPL location; each family is responsible for securing their own copy. (60 min.)
