The Battle of Lake Erie

The Battle of Lake Erie marks a significant place in history and is the only major naval battle ever fought on Lake Erie. During the battle, nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. An important victory for the U.S. during the War of 1812, it ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war and allowed the Americans to recover Detroit. The battle established the longest undefended border between two countries anywhere in the world that has continued for over 200 years. Join UA resident Jim Cowardin for a discussion of this historic battle.
