The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore

There is widespread belief that Thomas Edison is both the father of electricity and the inventor of the light bulb, but the reality is a far more complex and fascinating story. In The Last Days of Night, author Graham Moore pens an outstanding fictional account on this very topic – writing about the clash among the three key inventors: Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and George Westinghouse. While all three invented aspects of electricity and the light bulb, Edison had the foresight to get the patents first. Westinghouse cried foul and filed suit, meanwhile Tesla only cared to keep inventing.

Through this account, the reader will learn that electricity and its use could not have happened without various inventors and investors. This is an excellent historical fiction book and the epilogue was worth the wait!

Park Bench by Christophe Chabouté

Park Bench by Christophe Chabouté explores the world around a common object: the park bench.

Through this wordless graphic novel, we meet many different characters with interwoven and intimate stories. My favorite thing about this book was the way it slowly unfurled before me, watching these narratives connect and transform in their own unexpected ways. Again, Park Bench has no words, but you never feel like it needs them.

Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

In the follow up to his novel, Beartown, Backman continues the story of the titular town and its hockey-proud, quirky inhabitants.

The town is about to lose its hockey team to a nearby town which is intolerable for the residents of Beartown. The solutions to solving their hockey problem forces the residents to re-think their attitudes, prejudices and pre-conceived notions about their town and themselves.

Another lively, insightful and poignant read by the author as he continues to leave the audience wanting to know more about the town of Beartown and its very interesting town folk.
