A Nation Under Our Feet

A Nation Under Our Feet” is the latest, and most critically acclaimed take on Marvel’s Black Panther.

Written by award-winning author Ta-Neishi Coates, Nation follows an older T’Challa than the one we're used to seeing on film.  He is a more experienced leader, and has become a disillusioned hero, watching over a Wakanda that is on a decline. The kingdom is restless, there are rumblings of revolution in the air, internal terrorism on the rise, and the people of Wakanda have lost their faith in their government.

T’Challa, duty-bound, resumes his place as the nation’s ruler and protector, after his sister Shuri’s disappearance. A nation without its queen, which wants nothing to do with its king.

This series is recommended reading for newcomers and die-hard fans alike that are looking for more super-heroes in their reading lists.

Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak

It’s been years since the entire Birch family celebrated Christmas at Weyfield Hall, the family’s country manor. Olivia, a successful doctor and eldest Birch daughter, has spent the last several months in Liberia treating patients infected with Haag disease. Phoebe, her limelight obsessed younger sister, appears more interested in her social media presence than her fiancé. And both their father, Andrew, and mother, Emma, have life-changing secrets they are hiding from the family.

Due to Olivia’s exposure to Haag, she and all inhabitants of Weyfield Hall must remain in quarantine during the week of Christmas. Seven days of being surrounded by those you love, but don’t necessarily like, proves to be a challenge for the Birch family – only to be amplified when secrets are revealed and an unexpected guest arrives.

Told from the perspectives of each Birch family member, Francesca Hornak weaves each narrative to create an honest view on family dynamics during the holiday season.

Marilla of Green Gables by Sarah McCoy

This is the story of young Marilla Cuthbert, before Anne Shirley, growing up in the newly built Green Gables on Prince Edward Island. Mathew is a young man helping his father run the farm and Marilla is on the verge of womanhood when their mother dies during childbirth. In the wake of her death, Marilla takes over the domestic running of the household. As Marilla’s worldview grows, she finds herself learning about the abolitionist movement and the politics of Avonlea. Eventually she must balance the challenges of her strong beliefs, her budding romance with John Blythe, and the duties of Green Gables.

This imagining of Marilla Cuthbert’s young life, based on the character of L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, is a delightful addition to the genre of historical fiction, and will be sure to please fans of the beloved series.
