Post Graduate Life Lessons

Mary Oliver is an Ohio born poet.  Fifty years ago she won the Pulitzer Prize for her book American Primitive. With all the good scholars heading out into unknown worlds as they graduate, I can't help but think about this favorite poem.

Oh, good scholar,
I say to myself,
how can you help

but grow wise
with such teachings
as these -
the untrimmable light

of the world,
the ocean's shine,
the prayers that are made
out of grass?

Excerpt from “Mindful” by Mary Oliver from the book Why I Wake Early

Here are two forthcoming books about post graduate educations in the real world. Graduates In Wonderland, follows the true story of two recent Brown University grads who keep in touch as they travel the world on separate journeys. My Salinger Year is a memoir about a recent graduate who gets a temp job in a literary agency and winds up answering J.D. Salinger's fan mail.
